Choose a CNC mill around the complete setup

Travel, spindle speed and control names become useful only when they describe the same machine configuration. Use the part, fixture and tool stack to narrow the directory.

Draw the setup before choosing the travel

A machine’s table is the mounting surface; its travel describes axis motion. Start with the blank, fixture, clamps and feature coordinates. Include the approach and withdrawal of the longest tool, the lowest cut and the mass carried by the table. A part that fits on a table can still put a feature outside the reachable envelope.

Compare the spindle-nose-to-table window with the complete tool and fixture stack. A long drill needs withdrawal room above clamps; a short tool must reach the feature without exceeding the opposite limit. Adding a rotary table consumes height and load allowance. Ask for the selected build’s dimensioned setup drawing rather than relying on its model number.

Three vertical centres, three different envelopes

These catalog examples provide useful starting points for compact plate, housing and fixture work. Their model names do not define an interchangeable machine class.

Published model references; confirm the delivered configuration and permitted load distribution.

Chenghai VMC855800 / 550 / 550 mm1000 × 550 mm / 800 kg120–670 mm

Moving from the VM740SA to VM1050S changes both travel and supported load. Chenghai’s VMC855 has a wider listed Y travel than this VM1050S reference, but a different X/Z envelope. Neither comparison establishes which machine will hold your bore position or remove material faster. Evaluate the actual clamped part and toolpath.

For a long component that cannot be reached in one setup, compare a vertical centre against a gantry by work envelope. Buying a longer table alone does not resolve support, tool reach or datum transfer.

Choose spindle, tooling and control as one package

The reviewed VM740SA column lists a 10,000 rpm belt spindle and 20 tools; VM1050S lists 8000 rpm and 24 tools. Both identify BT40 holders, with a listed maximum tool diameter / length / mass of Ø80 mm / 300 mm / 8 kg. Neway’s motor-power pairs do not identify duty durations in this table, and bracketed items need an explicit quotation. Do not treat the higher number as continuous power.

Chenghai’s VMC855 page describes a BT40 belt spindle up to 8000 rpm, a 24-tool magazine and KND2000 as its standard control. Its retained model specification gives 300 mm maximum tool length and 6 kg tool mass. A different control, spindle drive or magazine needs a separate build sheet; specifications from another manufacturer’s VMC855 do not transfer.

Send the cutting-speed and torque demands for the difficult operation, not just a preferred maximum rpm. List the complete tool assemblies and ask about occupied-neighbour clearance, probing, coolant and chip evacuation. For control selection, name the actual hardware and software versions, supported postprocessor, required cycles and licenses, local service and the supplied parameter backup.

Compare complete quotations, then test the difficult feature

No comparable, dated transaction-price set has been verified for these exact configurations. A numeric “China CNC mill price range” would hide differences in control, spindle, workholding, tools, delivery and service. Request the same scope from each candidate instead.

Separate the base machine from rotary equipment, probing, coolant, chip handling, holders, installation, training, freight, taxes and destination support. Record currency, quotation validity and the delivery term. Compare the total delivered scope and exclusions before comparing the headline price.

Agree a representative trial: material and heat condition, fixture and clamp force, the difficult bore or mating face, thermal conditions and inspection method. Measure the released part and record loading, tool changes, inspection and rejects separately from time in cut. Axis positioning figures and rapid traverse are not promises of finished-part accuracy or output.

Build a shortlist around the work

Neway: compact to larger VM envelopes

Read Neway’s factory profile for the VM family and the boundary between three-axis, larger-taper and five-axis packages. Then compare the exact model column.

Chenghai: a defined VMC855 reference

Read Chenghai’s profile with its VMC and gantry context. Keep controller and tooling choices tied to the named build.

Send a drawing, setup envelope, material, batch mix, critical features and destination requirements. Ask each candidate to return a coherent configuration and an acceptance plan.
